Deals on 1 GB Memory for T42?

#1 Post by Paul Pennington » Sat May 30, 2009 2:02 pm

I'm looking for a couple of 1 GB PC2700 sticks for one of my T42's. I notice Frys has Corsair brand for $14.95 after a $25 rebate. Does anyone (Ray?) know anything about that brand? $30 is a long way from $114 for Crucial. Have there been any rebates on Crucial lately?

Corsair is a well respected memory brand that has been around forever. The PC2700 you referenced is from Corsair's Value Select Line. I've used it before in T4X machines without issues. Great price, and comes with a lifetime warranty. The caveat there is a limit of one per household. Get a relative to order the other. Oh, and don't hold your breath on the rebate...takes a few months to get it back.

Thanks for the info, Harry. I was not familiar with that brand.

What Harry said :) . Corsair has been in the module game for a long time. They don't actually make the memories that go on the board. Crucial is a spinoff from Micron; which used to exclusively use Micron chips (way in the early days). As long as you first test the modules with memtest86+, PC Doctor or some other well-known diagnostic and treat them with some care (don't subject them to a static shock, don't drop them, etc.), they should last longer than your T42.

Thanks for the information. Always nice to get the info from someone who works in the industry. I read in Wikipedia's article on Corsair that they started selling memory in the late nineties. I was amused to learn that ~10 years in the computer field is "forever" (Harry) or "a long time" (Ray).

In terms of laptop manufacturing and memory module production, 10 years is forever. The first commercial IBM Thinkpads were sold in 1992. You can do the math, but it seems to me that Corsair has been producing RAM for better than half the life of the Thinkpad line.

The $14.99 special turned out to be $24.55 after shipping and sales tax, but still the best price around. This rebate runs through June 18th.

Fry's web site sucks. When you try to order them online the page jumps back to the previous screen with no message or anything. Turns out these are "special order" items and can't be purchased online -- you have to call in. It would be nice if they said that.

Well, it was a good price but just one problem: the 1 GB Corsair module Fry's sent me was defective! Windows froze up before it could get through the boot process. I tried it in my other T42, but the same thing. Put the original memory back in and both worked fine. Grrr... Guess I'll scratch both Corsair and Fry's off my list. Now I get to fight my way through Fry's RMA process. They have horrible reviews on the web.

I went for the cheapest thing on newegg... $36 shipped no rebate. Of course, it's some no-name, so we'll see.

Just wanted to mention that Fry's handled the return of the defective Corsair memory with no problems, and I received a credit on my card quickly.
