T41's hard disk with "Ticking" noise

#1 Post by ttan98 » Mon Jun 01, 2009 5:56 pm

Just bought a second hand T41 with 40G of Hitachi Hard disk. It worked very well.

I can heard "Ticking" noise coming from the hard disk on aregular basis. Does it mean it will pack up in the near future or it it normal for some hard drives? Any advice, eg. change over to a new hard drive.

Cheers.

Run the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Ticking is not good. Usually, it means the drive has to reset and try again.

Ticking drives don't last long.

I diagnose the drive using Hitachi program, no problems found.

Do you think I still need to change hard drive?

It's hard to tell. I would get any valuable data off the drive without delay. I have had hard drived go out on me when the DFT said they were fine so I wouldn't rely on this too much. Having said that, the drive may still last a long time. Just make sure you back it up regularly - all drives go bad eventually!
