RAM Upgrade slows the speed down?

#1 Post by NecessaryEvil » Mon Jun 07, 2004 11:39 am

My T42P and T41P both experienced this; my X31 did not:

if you add an additional stick of RAM (a 512mb Corsair Value Select PC-2700), the RAM downclocks to 100FSB.

This was tested with 4 stick of RAM, and no combination would give me 133FSB for the RAM.

In the X31:
X31 + Corsair: 133FSB

in the T41:
X31 + T41: 100FSB
X31 + Corsair: 100FSB
T41 + Corsair: 100FSB

In the T42:
X31 + T41: 100FSB
X31 + Corsair: 100FSB
T41 + Corsair: 100FSB
X31 + T42: 100FSB
T41 + T42: 100FSB
T42 + Corsair: 100FSB

any thoughts? all but 1 stick were IBM OEM RAM.

where did you check the clock speed of the RAM?

Interesting. I ran CPU-Z on my T42p (2379DYU) and it says pretty much the same thing as you.

FSB 99.9MHz
Memory Frequency 166.5MHz

But, the Bus Speed is coming to 399.7MHz, not sure if that makes a difference.

I have 2GB of RAM in the machine (2 sticks of 1GB each) and it's PC2700 333Mhz. Very odd.

Actually, read this from the CPU-Z FAQ page:
Q: Why does CPU-Z misreport my memory module specification ? For example, my DDR PC3500 is reported as PC3200.

A: The SDR and DDR theorical bandwidth is computed using the module access time information for the maximal CAS# latency value, included in the SPD area. If the computed bandwidth is lower than the one specified on the memory module, that means in most cases that the SPD information on the module is not correctly programmed, and does not mean that the memory module does not handle its specifications.

my R50p came out to 99.9MHz as well -- it's the same main board as a T41/p.   my s30 came out to 99.6Mhz but that one is supposed to be 100MHz.

my R50p has two 512 sticks, one micron and one samsung.   CAS is 2.5 (3/3/7) and they register at 166.1MHz (3:5 bus ratio).

interesting application...

Strange.

my T42P is a 2379-DYU as well.

it shows CPU/RAM ratio as 1:1....I don't get anything showing 167fsb.

(again, the X31 shows the ration at 3:4; so it runs at 133FSB properly with the same sticks)
