#1 Post by plmijn » Sun Jun 07, 2009 8:24 pm

Hi all, I just want to see if T40p can use windows vista? Will there be any issues with hardware/software compatibility?

You can run Vista but it will be slow and video performance will be bad.

You're MUCH better off testing out Win 7 RC1.

Yes, as long as you have 1gb+ of ram. The main issue, though is that the built in Windows Vista (and I presume windows 7) drivers for the ATI mobility graphics do NOT support powerplay, meaning your GPU runs at full performance and full power consumption while on battery which eats up your battery life much faster than in XP Using the "Real" ati drivers.

If you are testing either of them, just do a driver update through device manager, and uncheck show only compatible hardware, and install the mobility 9000 driver which seems to work flawlessly with the ATI Mobility 7500 and other chips used in thinkpads. Video performance is fine for 2d apps, dvds, and very light gaming (our machines are aging sadly). The old ati cards are not compatible with the Aero interface or windows media center, though.

Good luck! I ended up going back to XP just for battery life, but Vista ran surprisingly well apart from that, although I do disable Windows Defender and limit search indexing to the user profile, and a few other "tweaks". Vista is a fast OS despite popular opinion, just a lot of companies released poor drivers causing instability, and people who have been using xp for 7+ years are not totally willing to learn an entire new OS, and people try to run it with celerons and 512mb ram... not a good combo!

Just my two cents!

X60 1709-H6U: T7200, 3gb Ram
T400 2767-RB2: P8600, 4GB Ram, Switchable Graphics, WXGA+
