Should I pay 2000 $ for it in Canada ?

#1 Post by manazca » Thu Feb 03, 2005 11:35 am

Hi all,

I could buy a Thinkpad T42 2373 cxu with a discount from school at about 2000 $ (excluding taxes). Here are the specifications. Could you please tell me if it is a good price? I have fewer options for buying laptops in Canada than you have in States.
Thanks in advance for your help. :)

opz
I mean: it's a grat deal if it's CND$2000

If you're talking in US$, it's just a normal price.
Current: X200, X40

It's $2499 Canadian AFTER taxes? Be more specific. Spell it out for us so we don't have to guess.

How much?
Which currency?
Before or after tax?

As a suggestion, it's best to be very specific in your posts so people can give the correct advice.

Sorry about that and thanks for the suggestion. So, the price is 2499 canadian dollars before taxes (which makes approx. 2000 american dollars).

Well, I have the same deal at my university (Concordia).
Personnaly, I went ahead and bought one from Bill, 2200$US, 2373-GVU and it was about 2800$CAN shipped (to a US location, then went to the state to get it and saved the taxes  )

I’m talking about Concordia too (and HEC).
I also thought about buying it in States but I have two problems: I don’t have an American address or relative/friend there and I need it before February, 15 (since I’ll travel to Europe).
Since I’m a newbie and it will be my first laptop I don’t know if it is worth the price or if it is suited for my needs. I basically want to run Matlab, Office applications and eventually SAS/Eviews. I would have preferred something less expensive but I cannot find a better alternative. Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I tried a lot of laptop and I can tell you it has the best keyboard out there, and a good overall feeling. Check out the Fujitsu at the Computer Store, it's not bad either.

If you absolutely want an IBM, get the CXU from concordia or the GVU from Bill. Shipping is about 75$US and add about 400-550$ in taxes you will have to pay to FedEx. Either way, you can get it before the 15th.

EDIT: The screen on the CXU(15inch) is better on viewing angle but the laptop is much more bigger/heavier than the GVU (14.1'). See this thread for picture of both screen size:
