Error 0271 T43p

#1 Post by Tony.Yarwood » Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:17 am

Hi all

Sorry to bother you all with this but I've been all round the mulberry bush try to get the right answer.

I recently bought a 15" T43p (2668). It had Ubuntu loaded and everything seemed OK. Wiped everything clean, loaded XP (SP3), got all the latest updates for XP and then started getting the error 0271 message on bootup.

Anyway plodded on and figured that getting the latest updates for the BIOS (1.29) and the Embedded Controller 1.06 might fix the problem, also loaded ThinkVantage and got the latest of everything, no joy tho :(

I read somewhere that's its a dead or dying CMOS battery, anybody confirm this? Why should it work OK with Ubuntu?

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards

Tony

0271 error is the lack of the system date and time. This usually occurs when the CMOS battery has died. Replace it, then reset the BIOS to defaults (I believe it's under the Restart menu) and set the date and time.

edit: Download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual for a nice reference (information about the system, error codes, how to take it apart):

If you have an eBay account, the CMOS batt is available from UK seller: indew - You can also purchase from IBM UK Service Parts - 01475 557601 (Which will cost you alot more!)
