Applying Liquid pro on T43p GPU&CPU and some other questions

#1 Post by windv » Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:57 pm

I removed the old thermal compounds on the CPU and GPU and put some Revoltec- Thermal Cooling compound. I guess its not the best, but that's what i had at my place. It looks silver, just like the Arctic Silver compound. After i made those changes i think there is a little drop in the temperatures, but when I play games(I've just tried WOW, Crisys) or use some heavy rendering software, the GPU still tends to go above 80C, sometimes 90C

Now, what i want to ask is

What is the Ati firegl v3200 made of? It looks aluminum or something silver. I have no idea, but since i know Liquid Pro will destroy it if it is, and i could´t find any info, i decided to ask before go...

i would be glad to hear ANY advices on the topic of appling the liquid pro

Had Anyone tried it on a T4x?

edit:

Also, will an T60/61 keyboard fit in T43s chassis?
Or any other parts. Can i put an R51/52p motherboard in the smaller t43? Is it better?

Thanks in advance:)

Welcome to the Forum.
There is no need to apply any compound on the ATI GPU.
And I personally think you shouldn't even bother with that Liquid Pro, which sounds rather dangerous, eating aluminum!
For the supposedly 2-3 degrees improvement, it doesn't seem worth it.

I would stick with Arctic Silver 5 for the CPU only, like most of us.
Then install TP Fan control: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=27

And lastly, Thinkpads are Business laptops, some of which manage to also run some games.
But they were never intended for gaming in the first place!

Hi Windv and welcome to the forums.

Some background - I've never heard of Liquid Pro and your comment about it distroying Aluminium had me looking for a data sheet.

Basically it consists of gallium, indium, rhodium, silver, zinc and stannous.
Referring to page 3 sections 10 & 11 where it states that in the presence of Aluminium and water it releases heat.
It also states that it has an alloying effect, especially on light metals.

I'm not sure what this means in the real world, but it doesn't look like something for the casual Heatsink Compound Applier.

Found this review which clearly showed that with LP, a CPU load was a whole 6 degs C cooler than the next best Arctic silver 5.

Bearing in mind how difficult LQ is to apply and the problems with potential chemical reaction to some types of metal, is a 6C decrease really worth it?

Discuss

Thanks for the replies!

There is no need to apply any compound on the ATI GPU.
Even after I removed the original one?
And also no way to make it cooler.
By default the GPU runs at 400Mhz core clock and 250Mhz memory...How much can I push this card? 450/300?

Then install TP Fan control: viewforum.php?f=27
I did. I also did install NHC (notebook hardware control) with ACPI control system, which is supposed to do the same kind of fan control just as tpfancontrol, but i cant understand which one is better. TP fan control is way more comfortable to use, and i have the feeling it switches on the fan not so often like the NHC. I tried to understand the logic in how, when and at which speed the fan is activated, but i couldn't. So now i use TP Fan Control together with NHC, but just for controlling the processor speed...
How do you think, which one of both is better for controlling the fan speed, or its all the same.
And also if I don´t use NHC to down speed the CPU, is it automatically set to lower frequency if i just set it to Maximum Battery Life power plan for example, or the speed of the CPU can only be controlled with some kind of software like the NHC?

@windv:

Try using NHC to undervolt your GPU, and you should have a much cooler machine. PM 750 runs pretty cool itself.

I'm not aware of the chemical that you're referring to, and would personally stay away from it for the GPU. If you feel that you must apply something, go with AS5, people have done it with no harm reported.

Good luck.

Its strange, but decreasing the GPUs frequency didn´t produce almost any decrease in temp.

And is the T52 motherboard in any way batter. I saw on ebay r52p motherboard.. does such an model at all exist?
Can i fit an t60 motherboard somehow in the t43p 14" chassis

There are no T5x laptops. There are R50/R51/R52 models, which are T4x models with a different, more sturdy case, albeit not as sleek.

You can't fit a T6x planar in a T4x frame. Period.
