Rescue and Recovery is Not Responding!

#1 Post by Plinkerton » Fri Feb 04, 2005 1:50 am

Since I just deleted everything on my backup external HD, I need to do another HD backup using Rescue and Recovery.

I already had it on my T42 2378-FVU, but it wouldn't open. I uninstalled it, redownloaded it, and tried to reinstall it, but it stops.

The first box pops up, the install wizard, then it stops. I go into the task manager, and it says it's not responding, and that's the end of it. Everything else seems to be up to date.

What's the deal?

Thanks a lot,
Plink

There is a well known problem with installing R&R which is related to the MBR somehow (the error message of R&R is complaining about the windows installer). I don't know if this has to do anything with your problem, but the only solution to get rid of this mentioned problem is deleting all partitions (including wiping out the MBR with additional tools) and doing a fresh installation. I know, R&R is sometimes a pain in the [censored].

Ahh... It used to work fine. I can't to a clean install. It's just not worth it. I guess maybe I'll have to find some backup program.

Any free ones someone can recommend? Other than that, maybe I'll get a copy of Norton Ghost or something. That should work for what I have in mind right?

Do you think if I install the old Rapid Restore Ultra, it should work no problem? Maybe I'll just do that.

Thanks.

I think one of the best backup tools is definetely Acronis True Image. Really fast and easy to handle. But not free. I wouldn't install the old Rapid Restore 3, because it creates an additional partition which is growing and growing.

The fix to R&R you need is here,

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57946

Alternatively, download the latest version and install that.

You *ONLY* need to re-install R&R.

Arrggg... It's still not working. I installed the patch, rebooted, redownloaded the R&R, and it still hangs. The file name of the R&R is:

setup_ibmrr1178-1.exe

and if I go into Properties, the file version is 2.02.0178

Any other ideas? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks a lot,

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread, as I'm still having issues with this. I haven't backed up my computer in a few weeks now, and I'm starting to get nervous that something could happen to it.

I've installed this patch, updated everything, redownloaded R&R, etc. Still, it hangs and gives me the Not Responding thing. Is there any way to get Rapid Restore ultra back? At least something is better than nothing.

Any help would be great, as I can't live on the edge of danger anymore!!! :D

Thanks a lot,

s0larian, thanks for that, but I don't appear to have any file resembling the .msi file he's talking about. If someone could give the exact name of it, that might help, but I don't see anything that might be it.

Thanks,
Plink

#12 Post by GangBang » Sat Apr 30, 2005 1:07 am

Problems Solved!!!
nomore error 1722.

For those who use Hitachi(HGST)HD, may download DRIVE FITNESS TEST program for free at www.hgst.com (http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm) to restore HD to factory setting.

follow these steps below:
1. Erase Predesktop Area(hidden partition) using ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance(opt)
2. Run DRIVE FITNESS TEST creates DOS bootable diskette the run the disk using external USB disk drive.
3. ERASE BOOT MASTER and ERASE DISK(may take hours depending size of your HD)
4. reinstall predesktop and all applications using Orgininal Recovery CD from IBM(note: you MUST leave the disk UNPARTITIONED otherwise the predesktop will not be installed)
5. Updates all drivers by using automatic TP software installer
6. Install latest rescue and recovery.

Good Luck...

the point is you must restore your harddisk to unpartitioned factory state, Do NOT Make any partition, Do NOT format, (I suggest you do manually, do not use Partition Magic or Norton Ghost;), may follow these steps above.
