need to ship back old keyboard?
need to ship back old keyboard?
Hello,
I received a replacement keyboard from IBM for my faulty keyboard. Do I have to ship the old keyboard back or can I just toss it? The IBM tech didn't mention anything about shipping back old parts, and there were no shipping instructions included with the package. Thanks.

Johnson, when did you get yours done? A LOT of people have had new keyboards sent out (swapping the china for the thailand ones, for instance) and I have never heard of IBM ever asking for the old one back. I myself have had 3 replacement keyboards sent to me about 4-6 months ago and they've never asked for the old one back (though I did have to send back replaced batteries and optical drives, naturally).johnson5001 wrote:The last time I called for a keyboard replacement, they said I have to send the keyboard back for them to verify that it is damaged. I think that makes sense.
On the other hand, if they don't require the keyboard to be sent back, some people might abuse this previlege.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

I called up IBM EZServ for my then in-warranty T23 and told them that something fell on my keyboard, destroying a key and its little plastic bits. I asked them to send a new key. No, they said, they don't send individual keys. The next day I had a spanky new keyboard (don't know its origin) and another box with a bunch of plastic parts for the top of the keyboard with various identifiers (T21, T22, T23...) It was super easy to swap the old keyboard out. Incidentally, they mentioned that they don't recommend removing the keys, even for cleaning, and no, they didn't ask for my old keyboard back!

What did you guys tell the tech support such that you don't have to send it back? and what number did you call? thanks
I think I had a thai keyboard, but has flexing issues. I sent in my laptop for repair recently, I think they replaced with the china keyboard. The replaced keyboard is so noisy when I type, the one I had previously was pretty quiet.

here's "my final answer"
... if IBM sends you a prepaid mailer and requests the old keyboard, then you will need to send it back.. if they don't, you don't.... it all depends on how the tech "coded" your CRU when he sent it out... put the old one on the shelf for a couple of weeks, and don't worry!
