any real solution for usb problem t40 thinkpad?

#1 Post by smith07031 » Mon Jul 06, 2009 8:00 am

I use alfa 500mw usb wifi ( excellent by the way, the best of them all)
On one t40, w same exact software shows 54 Mpps when I hold mouse over wifi icon.
On the other, 11 Mpps?!
No yellow marks in device mgr, tried removing all usb entries in device mgr, rebooting, same problem
Same realtek driver w utility in both t40's, same software
Is this just a flaky issue w some of the t40's?
Have a 3rd one, 54mpps on icon
Any suggestions, have seen older thread on this.

Are your USB ports showing up as USB 1.1 instead of 2.0?

See my last post in the stickied thread about USB. Basically I reflowed the southbridge chip with a heat gun and my USB went back to full speed USB 2.0.

Reflowing a motherboard with a heat gun is like playing Russian roulette. Doing it for the gpu is reasonable (the motherboard is basically dead without the gpu), but doing it to a perfectly good motherboard, just to get USB 2.0 to work? That is a bit extreme.
T30 (2366-86U): 2.0GHz, 1.25 GB mem, 100 GB HD, DVD RW, Broadcom b/g wifi, Win XP/Ubuntu
T41 (2373-155): upgraded to 1.8GHz, 1.5 GB mem, 100 GB HD, DVD RW, Atheros 108 super G, Win XP/Ubuntu
T60 (2007-68U):2.0GHz, 2.5GB mem, 500 GB HD, DVD RW, intel abg wifi, Win 7/Ubuntu

Yes, of course it is a gamble, but I know what I'm doing.

And all you are reflowing is the southbridge. If you isolate just the southbridge you'll be fine.

Or you could just get a cardbus USB 2.0 card.

I reflowed it as a side affect the first time I reflowed the GPU - it fixed it and it kept working untill I killed it the third time I needed to reflow it with the heatgun. if you really need it and it will not work otherwise, try it, or else get a PCIMA card and use the ports at the back for mouse, printers/other low speed devices.
