T43 Squeaking Keyboard

#1 Post by mpcook » Mon Jul 06, 2009 11:31 am

I had a key fall off and was shipped a new keyboard under warranty about 6 months ago. I am still under warranty and over th epast couple of months the keys have started to squeak. This affects roughly about a third of the keys on the right side...to some degree; and the "O" is quite loud, probably loud enough that it can be heard over a phone. I've never had this happen to any of my many Thinkpads so I thought I'd ask if anyone has had this happen? I have onsite warranty so could get a keyboard shipped, or have a repair done at my home, so I'm not too worried about it, but wonder if some keybaords are less prone to this than others (if I can try and get a certain one).
Thanks
Mike

If this is a 15 inch T4x, there are only 3 screws holding the KB and there is no screw under the right side. Try loosen the three screws, move the keyboard around a bit then tighten it back down.

Thanks for the advice, this is a 14" T43. I will call and get a new keyboard shipped, hopefully that will help.

I received my replacement keyboard, it is a 39T0519 but made in China, not Thailand. I put it on, and it does not feel very good. Some of the keys (mainly to the right) do not feel as tight, just not the right feel, some of them make a bit more noise, and the space bar makes a louder noise than the other keys, which is irritating (I use the space bar a lot!). All in all, is this a lost cause, should I call and get yet another keyboard sent, will it end up being the same? Should I search for an NMB Thailand keyboard on ebay and pay for it myself? Should I ask for my onsite service for the keyboard repair and not let the service guy leave until the keyboard feels right to me? If he doesn't have years of TP experience, he may not know a good keyboard when he sees one.
Thanks in advance for advice,
Mike

Look under the keys from the side of the keyboard. If either have blue rubber "nubbies" then you have the NMB keyboard. This is generally considered the best of the T4x keyboards. But you cannot request one specifically - they just ship out whatever is available. You could try spraying a little WD40 under the keys and under the keyboard in the region it's squeaking. I've never heard a keyboard squeak (!?)

It looks like I have have the blue nubbies on the new one so maybe it is NMB but made in China. It doesn't squeak, it clacks (right side only) and those keys feel loose, it has a worse feel than the squeaker! Maybe I will keep the squeaker, and spray some silicone spray. I guess I have nothing to lose at this point, I can always call and get yet another keyboard (or a technician onsite) to try again.

Thanks
