I have a 9lb behemoth and I'm finally going all out with a new laptop. I don't game but I have tons of ipod music, and do all the business apps (powerpoint, etc.). I'm buying a T42 with 15in screen but I haven't seen it or the 14 in. I travel overseas and take the computer home and to work on commute. I figured the 6 lbs 15 inch would still feel light. Am I stupid? Should I go with the 14in screen. I use this machine as my desktop plugged into a 20 inch plasma at work.
Lastly, for my needs should I just get an R51 or will I notice performance using web and excel/powerpoint type applications.
Thanks.
Is the T42 worth the money (over R51) and what size screen
Welcome to the forum
T42 gives better performance in 3D graphics but for web and office applications it won't make a difference.
If you are coming from 9 pound then either 14.1" or 15" T42 will make you very happy. The 15" SXGA+ has a brighter screen with much wider viewing angle. One downside of 15" is that battery does not last as long.
If you are on budget R51 might not be bad. But the T series offers a stronger shell. It's thinner and lighter too.

The 15" T42 is surprisingly light considering its size. One of my friends has one (with SXGA+ display) and compared to my T40 it doesn't seem substantially heavier.
The FlexView display is far superior to the standard display, though it consumes a lot more energy. My XGA looks pretty dull in comparison.
