How can I use Ghost 2003 to replace T41 HDD?

#1 Post by firstep » Fri Feb 04, 2005 6:51 pm

Hi, there. I just plan to order a 7K60 to replace my T41 5K80. I have Ghost 2003. How can I use it to replace the HDD in the most convient way? Anyone can share their experience? Thanks a lot.

I think the process is as follows,

1. Back up the whole HD into image files using Ghost 2003 and put them USB HD.

2. Remove old HD and install new HD, then use floppy or CD to boot.

3. Restore image from USB HD.

But I am not sure if any bootable CD or floppy can support USB HD.

I used Acronis TrueImage to clone the drive (cloning be one of the TrueImage options--doesn't Ghost offer that?) in my computer to the new one that was temporarily in a USB enclosure (cost me $15). Then I just switched drives. However, I'd already wiped my "secret" IBM partition, so copying that wasn't part of the deal. I don't know what spin that would have put on things.

It would be much easier if you can get a ultra slim bay HDD adapter, then you can just clone drive in GHOST.

A much more expensive alternative to the external USB enclosure.

Matt....you say the 2ndHDD adapter alternative is more expensive. I disagree. The only thing you need to compare here is the price of the 2ndHDD adapter vs. the price of an external case. You can find the 2ndHDD adapter on eBay for less than $40. I bought mine for $35 in Sept or Oct of last year, including shipping. If the difference of $15 to $20 is considered "expensive," if you buy a very cheap external case, then you are correct.

With or without USB/PCMCIA external case, you still have to buy another HDD, the cloning software and whatever method you boot up with (could boot by floppy drive cable kit or USB key, or maybe even another method).

Cheers to all.
