yeah, try www.laptopsdirect.co.uk , However be aware that the models they offer are way bellow par compared to US models in terms of the graphics cards they have. most have ati radeon 7500 only & the models are really quite expensive. Perhaps look into buying from Bill??? I think he ships to UK - www.thinkpads.com. Hope this helps & good luck!

I've bought all my thinkpads from www.action.co.uk - they seem to have a wide range of models either in stock or on ordered on request.

Check with Bill. Depending on the model you want he can possibly save you some serious money.

Yes, he ships to the UK and there is no duty on laptops, only VAT.

Why is that most of the t42s in the UK have only the 7500 ATI card??? It seems that even the basic models in the US have the 9600, whereas in the UK you have to fork out around £1800-£2000 ($3392-$3769). You lucky cats!!

Hi there,
I'm also from the UK, I decided to get a T42 from Bill last October after talking to another member (ian) who had a nice experience importing from Bill into France.
In the worst cases it seems the UK vs. US price differences can exceed £1000, which is quite terrible!

If you really must buy from the UK, I can also recommend action.co.uk (insight.com/uk) as they have a very wide product range (including accessories the t43) and the prices are competitive for the UK. Another site worth looking at is hemini.co.uk who also have a nice range + prices (you need to sign up to view them though.)
I'm also buying another T42 from Bill, FedEx 2 day to Europe is around $130-140. Be prepared for the following though:

-Paying VAT (17.5% for UK, no duty though) on the total declared value
-Paying fess (e.g conversion/wire) fees to send GBP to the US
-Getting yourself a UK power cord to replace the US 2 pin plug

Best of luck with making the decision + purchase

Is there any other way of buying it from the US then if I am in the UK ?

I would think so, apart from the above if you knew somebody in the States they could buy it for you and ship it to you. Typically I guess there's always eBay .. if it is the same person I know at least one respected member, RaysMD sells on there for nice prices.

But in all honesty, you couldn't go far wrong by going with Bill, he can surely save you a lot of money and even give you a pixel check (to check the screen before shipping for no stuck pixels). If you want to buy from the US, this is my top recommendation .. there's no commission for me for saying that .. just that happy with the service :)

I agree, buying from Bill is the way to go… I got my ThinkPad from him and the whole deal went down very smoothly… I got him to send it to my nice in the USA and from there it was taken to Iceland by a person I know and from Iceland to Denmark with another person I know, so I got it without having to pay any VAT or additional fees…
which is good for me cause I’m in studying at the moment…(low on cash) I saved about 2000 dollars on the whole deal... compared to what my ThinkPad
costs here in Denmark

i have my t42 on order from bill and i cant wait
even after gordon brown has added his 17.5% you're still better off buying from bill!

i'll be installing gentoo (possibly ubuntu depending what mood i'm in) on mine immediately after i've burnt the rescue cd's and deleted the rescue partition!

I ordered a T42p from Bill on Friday and it was in my hands first thing on Monday (in London). Outstanding service!

If you are registered for VAT the import process is incredibly painless, there are no charges at all.

If only it was easier to do foreign exchange!

Congratulations and welcome to the forum! Many new buyers don't "discover" Bill, as he is very "low key" even though he hosts this great forum. I have no connection with him (have never even met him), but know his service is legendary.

thinkpad to the UK

#15 Post by josephwaller » Thu Feb 17, 2005 9:35 am

hi,

I am considering purchasing a T42.

Is the US keyboard layout a problem?

I will be purchasing it for my company, presumably there's no issue with buying for a company rather than personally? Given it's all legal and above board?

thanks

You can buy the relevant keyboard for your country quite easily. Not sure about the cost though.....
