will t41 usb port power my scanner?

I can't get my T41 to recognize my new Canon 500F scanner. This little scanner runs off the USB port alone. Could the device not be working because it cannot draw enough power through the USB port? Can anyone suggest what might be wrong or what I might try? Have other people successfully used on a T4x devices like scanners that don't have independent power or ac sources? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

some devices need more power... try a powered USB hub,,,, (very inexpensive)
