That's how the fan in my T40 sounds.
Using TFanControl helps, but is there any cure for this annoyance? I've read the discussions on this site and it seems that installing the "long fan" doesn't change much, and therefore isn't worth the expense.

You don't need the long fan - sounds like you just need a new fan (short). Try ebay - you shoulod be able to get one for under $15.
