windows 7 installed on t40 thinkpad
Recently installed windows 7 rc on a t40(1.2ram). Everything worked great, speed with my alfa 500mw adapter USING EXACT SAME DRIVERS was Considerably Faster using speedtest on speakeasy, and actual downloading of files.
One basic problem(many post on net about this issue)
When using windows media player that comes w windows 7 rc, video stops and stutters.
For example if I download a virus-free wmv video clip to my desktop then play it w media player, this problem occurs as described (not with every clip but large ones tend to do this)
I have read that the new os is not designed for old processors like this centrino pent m 1.5ghz.
If anyone has installed windows 7 rc and has noticed this video problem or has a work around for it please post (have tried vlc player also, same problem)
I must note that when streaming video clips as on utube or nytimes.com, there is no stuttering or video lag whatsoever.
Thank you, will wait for your posts.

Re: windows 7 installed on t40 thinkpad
The video problems are a result of W7 not having drivers for the T40 graphics chip. There never were, and probably won't be, Vista drivers for it either. There are several posts on this forum about possible work arounds using the Vista driver for a newer ATI chip. But, results vary.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

The Windows ATI9000 driver worked better in Vista than the 7500 driver (I take it you have the ATI7500 graphics chip in your T40). Anybody know if this driver is included in WIN7?

Re: windows 7 installed on t40 thinkpad
I will check the exact driver that is in that os I installed; to tell you the truth, I just used whatever drivers the OS installed, the rest were updated auto. w windows update.
The install takes max. 35 minutes to the end, very fast; hardly missing any drivers at all.
I only noticed the problem w media player by people posting that problem on net.
As I said, it does not stutter or lag at all if playing or streaming videos in Firefox, only when you save a downloaded movie or clip as in wmv. When you open the file, it will as they put it 'pixillate' or stutter as in slow motion. It does not occur w all wmv files though.
Someone suggested media player classic(not MS); it does not solve the problem.
It is very interesting to me that with the exact same hardware alfa usb 500mw wifi adapter, the browsing and download speed is much faster with windows 7 although when you look at the driver that I updated with windows update, it appears to be the same one(version) I use w xp.
Of course I had to disable a bunch of processes (services.msc) to keep the thing running as fast and cool as possible(as in XP also)

Re: windows 7 installed on t40 thinkpad
I have Win7 running on a couple of T40s and it works great. One has 2GB RAM, the other 1GB. It *is* better on the 2GB machine, but quite acceptable on the 1GB machine.
I used the Compaq video drivers.. can't recall where I got that suggestion from, but it did the trick. Google "Compaq SP27665" and you should find the file. Use the "update driver" method to install the Comaq drivers... i.e. use the Device Manager "update driver" feature, choose "have disc" (or whatever the heck Win7 calls it) and point to the driver folder, not the top-level SP27665 folder.
Screen savers work, Media Player works without any issues. Aero glass doesn't work, and I had to turn off Flash hardware accelration, but that's about the only things missing.
