RAM upgrade to 2 GB PROBLEM on T43

#1 Post by babha » Wed Jul 22, 2009 3:50 pm

First of all hi to all, as iM new here!
And i have a problem. Got a used T43 with just 512 MB RAM - so i ordered 2 x 1GB Corsair RAMs after reading, that they are no problems in the T-Models.
The problem is: the RAM-socket beneath the keyboard works proper .. i tried all the sticks inside - NO PROBLEM. But if i ad - any - stick in the second one - the computer will not boot. It starts (sound), but nothing on screen, it seems to "freeze". Is there a solution? Do i have to change somewhere i dont know or download a program or something?
Is it SOMETHING that could be done about it??!!
It doesn´t seem that the seller will take the computer back because of that ... and i actually dont believe he knew about it when he sold it.
PLEASE HELP!
greetings
Manfred

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear of your trouble.

You could try 1 x 2gb chip in one slot.

Welcome to the forum.
There's nothing you can do about it, other than swap out the motherboard.
Insist that the seller accepts a return and give you a full refund.
After all, that machine is defective. Did you buy it as-is without warranty?

Just saw the post about 2GB in one slot. That's not possible AFAIK.

Yes, i bought it in ebay .. and there You have, at least in Germany, no warranty. Actually i dont think that the seller knew about the problem, BUT .. here i am ...
His first reactions didnt look like "Oh, iM sorry, in that case .."

There has been mentioned 2 GB in 1 slot. Is THAT possible?
What kind of RAM are You using? 4200? Higher?
I was VERY surprised to read in some posts, that people mix all kind of RAMs successfully. In a German forum i got the impression that the Thinkpads are very sensible and dont take everything ...

T43 can take 2x 2GB. OS will only use 2GB total either with 1x 2GB or 2x 1GB. PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 will work but they only work at 533Mhz, speed for PC2-4200.

Maybe you want to contact the memory manufacturer. I had a situation similar to yours and Kingston swapped my two sticks for one. I only had to pay to mail it in. $5 I think.

You can try to clean the memory slot, too. I'd try 1) compressed air, 2) pencil eraser, 3) alcohol.

Definitely sounds like a bad memory slot. The way the connector works, it's supposed to be self cleaning, but try cleaning it anyway - it can't do any harm although it's difficult to get at the individual contacts. I'd see if the memory vendor will swap the 2x1Gb sticks for a 1x2Gb stick plus any difference.
