Trackpoint mark on screen...
Trackpoint mark on screen...
I have had my t42 for around 6 months now and it is only today that i realised there is a track point mark on the screen. It came off quite easily with the use of a lens cloth but i am worried that this may cause some damage to the screen over time. I have been taking my tp into university quite a lot over the last few weeks but i use a jansport firewire bag which has good laptop protection and stops it from getting jolted around, i also make sure there is never too much pressure against my tp - such as books etc. I would appreciate some insight into why this happens and how i could prevent it, i am no expert but from looking at the casing of my tp it doesnt flex too much and i cannot imagine how the required force needed to make the screen touch my trackpoint could occur...sorry if this seems trivial and a bit complusive
T42 - 1.6ghz, 1gb Ram (upgrade), 40gb hd, 32mb ATI Radeon mobility 7500.
Do a search my friend, and you will find that there are a few threads regarding this issue. The main consensus seems to be that a shaggymac or screensaverz cloth laid between the keyboard and screen before shutting the tp resolves the problem. They also make for a handy non-scratch non-lint cloth to wipe the screen with as well.
Don't worry about being too anal or compulsive around here, as we all try to keep our thinkpads perfect!
I got a shaggymac, so I know the link to their site:
http://shaggymac.com/
Perhaps someone else knows the link to the screensaverz and can post it too.

Happens to me too, I wouldn't worry about display damage, it has to withstand a little pressure, like when holding your thinkpad.
You can try and push the trackpoint closer to the keyboard, incase it's a bit above normal, or simply try to tighten the screws that hold the keyboard.
The top cover and the screen do flex, it seems to also go against the palmrest too somehow, atleast on mine it does, I noticed some stripes on the upper part, probably some dust that gets between the display and the palmrest.

thanks for the help guys, i really wanna get my hands on those screensavrz but because i live in the UK i cannot get access to them which is a shame (if anyone knows where i can please tell me). I have to say that sometimes, i pick up my tp and i do feel some considerable flex, so maybe that is all the pressure it needs to get the marks on the screen, shame because my t22 never had this problem, that thing was a rock!
thanks again,
J.

You don't need any of the fancy shmanzy cloths...Go to an eye glass store and get an eye glass cleaner cloth - I believe it's the same material...Ask for the larger one - It covers the whole screen...They are cheap and not marks - It keeps the screen looking like it's brand new

They do make them
Well, at least here in Canada...I had to cut the edges off...It was actually larger than the 14" screen...

Try using the flat, dimpled track point. I've been using this one since I got my T41p and I've never had this problem ever - you practically have to jump up and down on the screen to make the screen touch it. I'm new to thinkpads, though, so perhaps it isn't the done thing to use the new ones (the original one sticks out a bit more - looks like a match head). When I got my laptop I had a choice of 3 trackpoints and I chose the flat one.

I believe there is no threat of damage to the LCD from the trackpoint. My trackpoint has been leaving a mark (that I clean off once in awhile) for almost 2 years and the LCD is unaffected.

Actually, I never understood the concept of those highly regarded screensavrz, that you have to order abroad for $$$$.
They are simple common microfibre cloths that you can get for a buck in any household/harware store.
I checked them with a professional screensaver cloth. The only difference was a nice PowerBook print (uhmmm... ok. i could skip that..) and nothing else.
I use a a very nice jetblack/silver microfibre cloth that fits perfectly to the Thinkpad. Was $1.29 and bought in a large department store (kitchen section).
never had problems with trackpoints or dust.
