Need help getting playback to work with my s9-hd and t42p

I'm trying to get my s9-hd motorola bluetooth headset to play music that's on my Thinkpad t42p. My t42p has built in bluetooth but I fear that it's to old to be fully compatible with a2dp. The laptop was built circa 2004. I can get the t42p to recognize and connect to the s9hd but I cannot switch my audio device to output to the bluetooth headset. It is not available as an option. Does anyone know if what I am trying to do is possible without buying an external bluetooth adapter? If so, can you help me enable a2dp on my t42p. If my t42p will not support a2dp could I purchase a usb bluetooth adapter like the motorola PC850 to get a2dp working? Thanks.
