IE v8.0 Tab Error!

#1 Post by ranjit » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:22 pm

Hi All,

I have just noticed a strange situation in IE v8.0.

When I have several tabs open, and I decide to close a few later, IE hangs and the page becomes "not responding". The only solution I have is to terminate IE and start over. How can I rectify this problem?

Cheers,
Ranjit

You have Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari. They are better, faster and more configurable... I stopped using this piece of crap long time ago...

Hi woomaa,

I totally agree with you, but is there a work around this nagging problem?

IE8 opens a new process for each new Window or Tab. So if you have mutliple Tabs open, you now have multiple iexplore.exe processes. This is new in IE8 (up from IE7) and (if I understand this properly) the new processes permit faster access to Windows and/or tabs. Processes take memory and are otherwise normally benign.

So with that background, check if you have enough memory to handle the additional processes.

You don't say what OS, but XP now needs 2Gb if running SP3, and Vista needs 3Gb.

Hi JDH,

Thank you for your message.

My IBM ThinkPad laptop is running Windows XP Pofessional Version 2002 SP3, and I have 1.5GB of memory.

How come this problem has suddenly popped up? Is it because I am running SP3 now with slight less memory?

Cheers,
Ranjit

Hi Ranjit - 1.5Gb should be enough even with SP3.

Look down at the bottom right for Internet Protected Mode. It is probably on and then keeping track of urls that are OK or not OK. I turned this OFF because I browse with a great deal of common sense. Try turning this off to see if that helps. Also turn off the Phishing Filter temporarily. ... JDH

Hi JDH,

I have turned off Internet Protected Mode as well as Phishing and still the tabs are behaving funnily. What shall we do now?

We will have to see if any one else has an idea. IE8 is working well for me and I have provdided the setups I use, so I am not certain what your problem might be. ... JDH

With respect to Vista, it appears you need SP2 installed for IE8 to work well. I know this thread is basically about XP Pro, but I wanted to cover the bases. Also, I have IE8 working well on my own XP Pro machine which is spec'd out pretty much like ranjit's machine in this respect. ... JDH

Hi JDH,

For some odd reason, the tab issue seems to have disappeared as soon as I rectified the problem that I was facing with Access Connections V5.30 (explained in another thread)! The quirks of Windows!

Ranjit
