Questions about upgrading Bania 1.6 to Dothan 2.0 for T40p

#1 Post by plmijn » Mon Aug 03, 2009 6:02 pm

Hi everyone, I successfully upgraded my CPU from Bania 1.6 to Dothan 2.0, thank you very much for the advice that I found in the forum. But I still have some questions, I would like to know if I need to flash a new bios so that it can run at 2.0 or I just use NHC to set it. When I set it to 2.0, will it affect my laptop in the long run. Because I don't want it to break down.

Just to clarify, it is not running at 2.0Ghz right now?

I replaced the Banias 1.4 with a Dothan 1.8 in my T41 and everything just worked. I upgraded BIOS whenever, PM Driver whenever, and the Power Manager application whenever. Speedstep worked and so the CPU idled along at 600MHz most of the time, but Virtual Machines would drive it to 1.8 with no problem. You do not need to run it a full speed all the time for any reason. Let Speedstep do its job.

Well NHC does show the current clock speed. At idle, it will likely show 600Mhz, but once you apply a load it will clock up to 2000Mhz.

I use dynamic switching for the CPU speed settings in the NHC, I don't know if it is appropriate to do it.

Dynamic switching is the way to go in order to keep CPU temp low.

Make sure the T40p is plugged in to the AC and that you power settings are on Max Performance. You should see 1.99 or 2.0GHz in the system properties (right click on My Computer and select Properties). You need a BIOS upgrade to run the T40s with the Dothan CPU but it sounds like yours has already had that.

To check if you need a bios upgrade, check the main bios screen, and if the processor reads "??GHz" then you need to upgrade.
