Ultraslim bay drive broken where to buy

#1 Post by Sand » Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:17 am

I dropped my laptop and the ultraslim bay drive is broken and unusable. I took it to a computer shop and he wanted 200.00 to replace it. I couldn't afford that so I was wondering if there is a place I could buy the part and do it myself. I found a site online that shows how to do it. I went to the Lenovo site to look for the part, but I couldn't find it.I don't know if Lenovo would carry IBM parts.

Could someone tell me where I could purchase this part and what the numbers on it are, or where I could look them up, so I know exactly what to order? I have the T42 2379DXU. I think it may be CD-RW DVD combo but I'm not sure of that. I just know it's called Ultraslim bay. There is something like it on newegg.com but I don't know the right numbers. Also, it was called a second drive so I don't know if that is the same thing.

I went to the Hardware forum here sometime ago to see if there was one for sale but did not receive a reply.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me with this ?

Thanks,
Sand

The combo (CDRW/DVD) Ultrabay Slim drives for the T4x line sell for $15 to $25. If you post a Looking For ad in the forum marketplace, you'll probably get a response within one day.

You could also opt for a DVDR (CDRW/DVDRW) or a DVD drive. The DVDR's run $45 and up. The DVD's maybe $15 - $20.

It's a simple swap (flick release tab and pull the eject lever), once you have a good one.

I suppose there is an outside chance that your machine is covered by the tail end of a 5 year warranty, if so, a working drive is free, just call 1-800-IBM-SERV.

Underclocker,

Thanks for those leads. I will follow up on them asap. I am confused though about all the choices. I don't remember what it came with or which one I would get the most use from. I mainly use it just for downloading things or burning things. Don't know which one that would be.

I thought I only had a three year warranty, which just ran out. I never heard about the 5 year one.

Thanks,
Sand

Look on the front bezel of the drive - it will tell you what kind of drive it is but I suspect it is a CDRW/DVD.
