T43 Purchase
I have decided to buy a T43 using the TABOOK specs.
Help me out with the poll, whether to buy now or wait!
Thanks.

It is always a good idea to wait a few months to see if any issues crop up with the hardware or software.
I bought my T40 when it first came out, and I ended up doing a lot of backyard industrial engineering to get it just right (fixing the keyboard flex with foam, dealing with the loose battery, adjusting the palmrest with foam to keep it from creaking, etc.).
If you need a machine now, the T42 is a fine choice.

I second that, I would wait not so much for any price decreases, but to make sure that there are no unfixed engineering issues.. T43 is very different internally, you never know what problems may come up. I remember my T30 (and many other T30s) losing the use of the second memory bank due to poor thermal engineering.

T43
I would wait for the T43 (actually that's what i'm doing ).
Why to buy old tech , when the new one is ava in 2-3 weeks for a bout the same price ?? about problems and issues - doubt that will happend and if they will, then that's why i got warranty.

Re: T43
I disagree.
IMO there is little functional difference between the T42 and T43, and the T42 is a more or less proven design.
Warranty coverage is for dealing with freak component failures, not engineering flaws that may take a long time to resolve.

Yes. The palmrest is flawed IMO, but can be fixed by end users.
The system board is not an Intel design. The chipset, CPU, and wireless are from Intel, but IBM has to come up with its own system board.
In all likelihood there won't be any problems with the T43, but I think as a general rule it is better to play it safe and wait.

the construction is proven, and the sonoma board is Intel, which imho rocks even more than IBM

Wait. Whenever there is a big change to a notebook (internally or externally) it is always best to wait until it has been out for a few weeks. You will get to see it's possible flaws and whatnot. I remember when the Dell Inspiron 9200 was announced...All the Dell guys preordered the WUXGA screens, and when they got them, the screen was terrible. It was sparkly or something like that. Not that IBM would go cheapo on any components, (they hardly do) but it is still best to wait so you can hear of real life experiences with the laptop, and then make your decision.
As interesting as it is, all of the faults you described still made it to my laptop, a T42 which was built in October 2004, hence there's no certainty of such non-electronic engineering mishaps on T43's to to be fixed if they occour.K. dvorak, did they fix the fan-pulsing problem? My T40's fan makes a slight pulsing noise every 30 secs. It used to be every 5 secs but a firmware update reduced the noise somewhat.
Most of the time its not noticeable but if I am in a silent room it can be annoying.

I like to hold off until the second or third iteration of a series. I was badly burned with a Toshiba Tecra 700CT many years ago, and decided then to never get revision 1 again!
Since then a Thinkpad 770ED, A21p and now a shiny new T42p have seen me through with excellent results.
You get a more mature stable design by waiting.

T41p
T41p's hdd was of 7200rpm and when it was released, it had a flaw in firmware which gave a crash often.
Besides, the expensive T41p had a big price diff when dothan was released. There was no big performance diff. The flexview LCD was something that I was not interested in.
You can always spend money on extras like a nice bag, and other attractive hardware tools, etc.
The design flaws always exist, and the warranty is not for that purpose cos it takes weeks to get the machine back from IBM sometimes. When u start using a notebook and you don't have it for weeks, it's a really pathetic.
regards
Parthiban.

I haven't been to quiet rooms lately and don't know what you're actually referring to. Perhaps give me a small description.K. Eng wrote:dvorak, did they fix the fan-pulsing problem?
