T43p Centrino wireless performance drop on 7 w/ Vista driver

#1 Post by tannerj » Tue Aug 11, 2009 11:20 pm

Hey,

I recently just got a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate loaded on my T43p (legit Technet copy :)), and for the most part I've been very happy with the performance... I get some occasional lag, which could probably be addressed by tweaking Aero (currently have default options), aside from that it's been very snappy. One thing I have noticed a drop in performance though is with Wireless... it works fine but feels slower in general compared to the wireless performance I had on XP Pro. Has anyone noticed this either on Vista or 7 compared to XP? I have gone through the config for the wireless and set the power saving and throughput options to enhance performance like I did in XP, but it still feels a bit sluggish in comparison.

More detailed Specs:

Type: 2668-N1
Processor: Intel Pentium M 2.26Ghz
RAM: 2GB DDR2 (PC4200 I think)
ATI FireGL V3200
HDD: 80GB
Wireless: Intel PRO/SET 2200BG 802.11b/g

I'd greatly appreciate hearing some thoughts on this from other T43p owners here :)

Check the wireless signal strength / power mangement in the driver properties or in Thinkpad Power Manager. From my own experience, they are incorrectly labeled (low power savings might be low power radio mode).

The best thing to do is probably to monitor the power draw (when in battery mode) in power manager and network throughput speeds while changing those wireless power management settings and testing each time with a large file copy over the wireless network.

btw. why are you using Vista drivers? I know that at least for the 2915ABG there are drivers available through windows update in Win7.

I have a T43P running the Windows 7 RC from Microsoft website.I have everything left to default settings. I'm very happy with it.I have 2 gig's ram and a new 160 gig hard drive(gives the 2010 error but it's a fast drive).
With the wireless i find i have better and faster connection speed then i do in XP Pro.
I have intel 2915ABG and have a duel boot with XP Pro and Win7(RC 7100).
Also i'm NOT using Lenovos AC to handle the wireless.I'm just letting windows handle the wireless and find it very good.I like it better then the way Lenovo AC handles it.

I posted several moths ago about a similar issue - upgraded a T41/XP with a T61p/Vista. I have two T61p machines now (both upgraded from T4x) and they are both slower with wireless internet than their T4x predecessors. Could never figure out the problem so we've just resigned ourselves to slower wireless performance. I think its a software issue (vs a wireless card issue).

Seems like a lot of people I know are having performance issues with wireless on windows 7, regardless of brand and what wireless card they're running. Perhaps this is something that will improve with future updates to win7

Well, looks like I'm a lucky person, I never had any problems and the installation of Win7 in my T43p was incredible fast (according to MS standards)...
