Wallpaper Appears Only At Shutdown

#1 Post by edbatista » Tue Feb 08, 2005 9:20 pm

Unusual display-related problem here. I'm using a beautiful image of the world at night as my wallpaper.

But I changed my display settings, trying to brighten up the dull display on my T40 2374, and I foolishly didn't note down every change I made. Now the wallpaper only flashes onscreen briefly as the last image seen before shutdown. The rest of the time I have the standard blue backdrop, even though my wallpaper image is clearly selected in the display settings.

Any thoughts as to what I did to screw things up? Thanks!

Sometimes Windows bugs it up for you... Try changing the wallpaper to something else, then go back to that link you posted in Internet Explorer, right click the image, and choose Set as Background.. That should "refresh" it :)

Yep, Windows will sometimes bug out like that - if you change your wallpaper, your previous one will occasionally flash as you logoff as well. Refreshing as none says works, as does using the TweakUI powertoy to copy your user settings to the login desktop from the Logon / Settings menu.

BTW, I love those Blue Marble satellite images. For a while, I had a 1600x1200 background that I composited from a false-color cloudless map with that same nighttime shot you use:

I used an IE fade script on active desktop to seemlessly blend the three images so every 15 minutes or so it would cycle from night to day:

The only problems were 1) the CPU usage would spike to 100% every time the fade transition happened, and 2) yeah I know the entire world isn't night at the same time  :D

Good luck with the wallpaper fix!

Bingo. Thanks for the tip, guys. Nice photos, too--too bad about the CPU drain.
