T42 driver for 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 winvista

#1 Post by rwilcher » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:12 pm

Hi All . some time ago I at a t42 the the GPU in the subject line. I found s post in the T42 hardware section
that had a url for a radeon 9000 driver that did work pretty will on this box. However , the hard drive in this
box suffered a bad shock and died. I replaced the drive and got the machine back up but can't find the post
about the ATI 7500 driver I used originally to get it working. This was some time ago so if anyone remembers
posting info about the ATI Radeon 7500 being usable with the 9000 drivers please repost . Now the machine is
defaulting to standard VGA and not using a driver at all .

Thanks.

You must uncheck the box "compatible hardware only" during driver installation (when looking for the ATI drivers native to Vista). After this the ATI GPU drivers are visible (both the 9000 and the 7500). Installing the Radeon 9000 vs the Radeon 7500 driver improved the Vista business graphics score (from 1 to 1.9) but performance didn't seem to change.

The Radion 7500 (non-mobility?) driver is a lot more flexible than the Radeon mobility 9000. You get a weird split screen at first until you set the refresh rate from the 43Hz default to the necessary 60Hz. With the 9000 driver, I get 800x600 or 1024x768 resolutions only, ie stock resolution. With the 7500 driver, I get everything up to 2048x1536, including a very usable windowed 1600x1200 and 1920x1080 (just increase the refresh rate for the notebook panel to get rid of flicker - I used 120hz at the highest resolutions - should work fine with an external display).

Having said all that, DON'T DO IT! The T4x series are real slugs on Vista - stick with XP, you'll be much, much, happier with the performance!

FWIW I've had a T42 on Windows 7 for a few months now, and it's a great email/surfing machine. My wife even uses it for video streaming and DVD's. I wouldn't call it a slug.

I haven't tried Win7 yet - from what I hear it's much leaner than Vista. But I can confirm that Vista is not a good choice for the T4x.

Uninstall your video driver in Device Manager. Reboot the system and it will say "new hardware found" - you will go to the new hardware installation wizard. Alternatively, go to control panel and select "install new hardware".

You must uncheck the box "compatible hardware only" option during driver installation, otherwise, the radeon 7500 and 9000 drivers aren't visible for some reason. Once you uncheck this box, you'll get many more video chip options to install.
