Max external screen resolution T42 1440x1050

#1 Post by jwege » Tue Aug 25, 2009 1:16 pm

Hi,

I have switched from my older R52 to the T42 model with the 1440x1050 screen resolution (internal)

I have the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series grafics adapter with 64 MB installed.

Is it true that this model supports only up to 1280x1024 pixels on the external Monitor?

I have not been able to configure any other (highet) resolution on the external monitor so far (even if I use ONLY the external one).

The monitor supports 1440x1050 and even the old R31 is able to produce larger external results than my T42 ...

Anyone that can help me, please?
Thanks so much
Juergen

That would really depend on the monitor, I guess. I have a T42p which seems to be quite happy to drive anything up to 2048 x 1536. The Radeon 9600 can certainly drive anything up to that resolution too.

Could it be possible you have an old driver?

Unless you have an intel GPU R52, it with ATI X300 GPU is newer than T42 with ATI 9600. Internal SXGA+ LCD is 1400x1050. You may want to install Presentation Director. When you set up a new monitor, it will help you to set the correct resolution.

Best is to use DVI connection to the external monitor then resolution is set automatically. Generally speaking WinXP SP3 doesn't support many wide resolutions without a monitor driver or DVI. WinXP MCE, Vista and Win7 will support wide resolutions natively.

My WinXP SP3 is driving 1400x1050 (internal) + 1680x1050 (external) via DVI.

Officially T4x's DVI connection (through docking station) supports resolution up to 1280x1024. However, there is a driver-hacked method for workaround and some people reported that they can achieve resolution of 1920x1200.

Currently I am using T41 with ATI 9000 and T42p with ATI FireGL T2 (i.e. almost the same GPU as your T42) and connect to Dell 2001FP at 1600x1200 using VGA (analog) connection. The image is blurred. After using PowerStrip to lower the refresh rate from 60Hz to 45 Hz, the image is much sharper and is comparable to DVI.

I had no problems getting 1600x1200 out of the DVI connector of the T42, without any special hacks (did use the Omega Drivers though). Couldn't try higher than that, since had no actual monitor to support it.

Just bought a Philips 19" widescreen LCD with a native resolution of 1680x1050. I had it running out the VGA port but it looked awful, so I plugged in a DVI cable to see what it would do. It appears to work fine at that resolution.

This is on my Thinkpad T42p, sitting on an IBM Port Replicator II and running the standard IBM graphics drivers for the Mobility FireGL T2-128. The latest ones you can download from the Lenovo web site. So my conclusion is it does work, but if you want to try my setup, use the latest drivers from Lenovo's web site.

I'm happily running 1920x1200 (WUXGA) with a T42. I use the Omega drivers and the DVI connection via a port replicator.

Sorry to respond that late - got a big house-refurbishing project here taking my breath away.

Thanks for all the input. I have now tested with an (signifivcantly older) CRT and guess what: works with highet resolution. Seems that I thought the BENQ TFT to be better than it is. So, yes seems to be a restriction thing on the monitor side where the "auto-negociate" did me a trick ...

Thanks again

Just another note: My T41 with the Mobility Radeon 9000 32MB won't drive 1680x1050 out the DVI port with the standard IBM drivers. Maybe it's something to do with whether you have a FireGL or not. 1680x1050 works fine using the VGA port - it's just a little blurry though.

I'm running a Samsung 2343BWX (2048px x 1152px, 16:9), via DVI and a port replicator. It was completely plug-and-play with my T42, no driver witchcraft needed. Windows XP's display properties dialog detected the monitor's native resolution and presented it as an option in the drop-down. Couldn't have been easier.

All in all, it's not plug and play. Download POwerStrip, add custom resolutions if your monitor is widescreen, etc etc. But it's a fact that all radeon-based t4x can drive large screen resolutions no matter what, with the right driver.

This was an issue on the early drivers - but the latest Lenovo drivers work up to 1920x1200 just fine.
