I just got my new 2378 FVU as recommended on this forum. THANKS!
I returned my original T42 2378 R4U for the higher resolution, better video card and the slight increase in cpu (1.7 vs 1.6). I have noticed that Mobile Meter readings are about 8C higher. The new one reads 45C while the original read 37C while idling in the same environmental conditions. That seems a large increase in temps just for processor and video card upgrades. Is this too high? Temps do not rise much higher unless I am engaging in a high intensity video game. Then it will rise to around 60C after 15min game play. Hard Disk readings are the same for either laptop.
BTW I ordered this new T42 at 2pm on SuperBowl Sunday. It was shipped from Hong Kong and arrived at my house in Arizona 39hrs later!! That is FAST service. I LOVE IBM. I have been converted from a 12yr Dell supporter. This T42 just exudes QUALITY. Dell's have always represented fairly good value for the $$ but newer models have slacked in the quality department.
Treker
CPU Temp higher on 1.7 Than 1.6
Word and Web on 1.8Ghz 15": 49 degrees C.
Idles at 45 degrees on 1.8Ghz
Idles at 37 degrees on 600Mhz
HDD at 32. degrees all the time.
Having the same numbers for 1.7Ghz sound fairly normal, I wouldn't worry.

IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

Set your processor in adaptive mode when you are AC. You will have to "create a new power scheme" for that and set your CPU in adaptive mode.
You will NOT notice any performance drop using adaptive mode as CPU will throttle up on demand.
My fvu idles at 40 - 41 C, running at 600MHz during idle. Before setting it to adaptive power scheme it would idle at 48 - 49 C while CPU constantly running at 1.7GHz.
