Drivers problem with T41

Hey there. I have problem with an old thinkpad that i still would like to use. (dad gave it to me, its working fine and i see no reason i should throw it away). Anyway yesterday i formatted the whole thing, just wiped it clean and put Windos XP pro on it. Now i have trouble with drivers. I cant connect to the internet, i dont have any sounds and god knows what i'm missing also. I have googled alot about drivers and stuff. Nothing seems to work. I downloaded some audio drivers from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46258 this site. I am a real noob when it comes to thinkpads and i dont know what to do. i usually use my pc and with what i havent had any problems.

Hi Kuuluud and welcome to the forums.

You've gone to the right place for the drivers and have done half the job when you've clicked on each of the .exe files.

IBM has a slightly odd system because clicking on the .exe doesn't actually install the driver but just extracts the driver programs into a directory C:\DRIVERS\....\the_extracted_driver.

What you now need to do is to to go into Control Panel > System > Hardware Devices (there may be another step - I'm on a Linux TP!) to arrive at the hardware driver 'tree'.

You'll see a number of drivers will be missing with yellow exclamation marks.

Update each missing driver by pointing it to the C:\DRIVERS\....\ directory to find the correct driver you need.

There may well be a couple of unknown drivers listed, which are often the modem and ACPI drivers. Also a missing network driver is often the wireless.
