T42 Unable to power up

#1 Post by cmh711 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 5:47 pm

I hoping to find out what may be wrong with my T42. I am unable to power up the laptop at any point. I have removed the Battery and while the laptop is plugged in, if I try to power up the Battery and Wireless lights begin to blink and I hear a beeping noise. Is there a potential fix for this issue? Has anyone seen or had this issue in the past?

I'm hoping this could be fixed, but if anyone has any additional information it will help to determine if it should be put in the recycling bin.

Thank you

I think your T42 may have the 'loose GPU' problem common on many T4x's. Try applying pressure to the palmrest with your hands when you start your machine and see if it powers up like normal. If that doesn't work, remove the keyboard and apply pressure with your finger directly on the GPU when you start it. The GPU is pretty much right beneath the mouse buttons of the keyboard before you remove it. It is either immediately visible if you have the short fan or it is right underneath the end of the fan if you have the longer version.

Thank you for the suggestion. It appears the soldering on my GPU is cracked. I ended up using a temporary solution highlighted in the following post:

This seems to be a great temporary solution until I purchase a new Lenovo

This is the correct link: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=74366

Send it in to GPU Medics http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-MOTHER ... 0509139459
Very reasonable, and excellent work!
Way cheaper than buying another laptop, and you save the environment also!
