Internet doesn't work with two programs at once

#1 Post by kuma » Wed Sep 23, 2009 10:04 am

Thank you to everyone who has helped with all the questions asked here by all us novices.
So I decide to do a clean reinstall of my HD since I only had 1 gig of free space. Then like a jerk, I thought well I've got this XP pro update disc that I bought years ago, I should install that. So I did. Ok so I've been trying to get things running to how they were, by updating all the drivers to the Thinkvantage software. I was looking through one of the Thinkvantage updates, and it said that I should be running .Net 3.5 or 3.4. Now I never remember downloading this before, and I had just run the windows update and it said everything was up to date. So I downloaded .Net 3.5, and everything seems fine. I updated the driver for the Video card bc I thought things were running really choppy from streaming websites.

But websites seem to download significantly slower now than they did before, and I can't download iTunes music from their store, and web surf, at the same time, as in the web is just shut off to IE or Mozilla. I don't think I've downloaded the most up to date Access Connection yet. But what is going on here? Thanks.

:D

Sounds like a fine mess you got yourself into eh.

Do you have the Automatic Windows updates set to automatic? Also usually when you install new software the options will automatically choose auto updates. I usually am picky about when I'd like to update. I get a notification about new updates and install them when I feel like it. Usually when my antivirus is updating my internet speed slows down. If I had other updates going at the same time I'm pretty sure it'd be a drastic change in speed. Some Windows updates are quite huge! Which Service Pack of XP do you have?

If you've already done all your updates then have you tried cleaning your hard drive? I use CCleaner as it gets raves by everyone and it doesn't cost anything. I also would suggest scandisking and defragmenting your hard drive.

It also sounds like you need a codec pack for your Itunes. I don't use Apple products but a codec pack I installed is Klite codecs. It works fine and decodes all sorts of video and audio formats for me. There are other packs out there but this is the pack I use.

I really don't think that it is the Windows update that is slowing things down. Literally all pages wont load when I am downloading music from the iTunes store.

I was thinking about just loading .Net 3.0.
Any ideas?

The newest System Update (which replaces the old Software Installer), requires at least .Net 2.0/SP1
Apparently different .Net versions do different things, so I'd install the above 2.0 as well.
Another thing, if you download an IBM/Lenovo pgm/driver, it just unpacks into c:\drivers\whatever.
You have to go into those whatever subdirectories, and doubleclick the setup.exe in there to install the IBM/Lenovo stuff!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
