It is my belief that we will see SATA and other new technologies integrated into the T43 after a few months. I think these first batches are worth passing up on but IBM builds their designs to last and I can only envision them including SATA in the near future.

I don't see why not. The drives are out and many '05 laps will be using SATA, PCIe, etc.

Maybe someone who knows more about them will follow up.

Assuming the T43 is using the new 915 chipset, it will almost definately be using SATA due to the new southbridge w/ the 915.

I really haven't looked into the T43s yet and i'm sure someone else has so i'll leave it at that...

thank you to both of your for your replies.

Another question, would SATA hard drives be different in thier hard drives, or it is the same hard drive like 7K60 when connected to a SATA capable bus, show difference in performance.

thanks

tabook (14" t43) only says:

Disk 40GB8 HS (5400 rpm) or 80GB HS (5400 rpm) / 9.5mm high / removable, upgradable / 9.5mm high bay / supports 2nd disk / IBM Hard Disk Drive Shock Absorber / IBM Active Protection System

maybe those are sata disks?

The chipset supports SATA drives, but IBM isn't incorporating SATA drives in any of the T43 models. In fact, the drive bay will still be an IDE drive connection. So there won't be any way to add internal SATA disk storage, as the Ultrabay Slim will also be IDE. Neither Azalia (advanced sound) nor SATA will be taken advantage of in this release of T43 models. These exclusions were in the last T Series Roadmap. And for what it's worth, the DDR2 memory will only be running in single channel mode, in part, to save power. But this essentially renders DDR2 only slightly faster than DDR, despite the bus speed increase. Look for approx. 7%-10% memory speed increase in benchmarks.

Hi Daniel,

Slightly off topic, but any idea when we might see the HMM for the T43/p?

Cheers,
Rob.

I have to disagree here. In past models IBM has designed the series to be flexable and it is very well a possible change in the future (think Radeon 9600 and biometrics on t42 for a quick example) even though it is not currently planned. I'd like to see the t43 roadmap if you can post a link.

Edited,

This is a huge high resolution image

http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib. ... R_SATA.jpg

shows an image of the Hitachi SATA drive, the connector definitely seems to be different than the current connector, so I guess the drivers are only for the chipset and not for the actual drive itself.

will they at least use the 5k100 drives, or the older 5k80?

Kev,

We'll all be able to verify this soon enough when there are T43/T43p systems in folks hands, as well as a HMM for the T43. Then I suppose the SATA/Azalia/DDR2 implementation specs/facts will be indisputable.

Again, from what I've seen, we probably won't see ThinkPads equipped with SATA drives or dual channel DDR2 until at least Q3. And there are no plans to incorporate/utilize Azallia, because as far as IBM is concerned, Azalia isn't something 90% of their customers would want or pay for, incremental costs being what they are.

But all bets are off, including the next 18 month roadmap, once the Lenovo deal is finalized. Who knows what we'll see in ThinkPads, despite what IBM and Lenovo officials assure us is a concrete cast in stone roadmap. :)
