t42 SSD

#1 Post by irus » Fri Oct 02, 2009 11:07 am

hi guys!

im looking at upgrading the hitachi 80 gb PATA to an SSD what are the options available with and without converters for the fastest possible speed ?

Thanks

edit: this is what i've found to be a good balance of price/performance so far http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820609445

will this fit in t42 without mods? can the current 80gb hdd be shifted into the cdbay slot?

Yes it will fit. You can throw the old drive in the UltraBay if you buy the adapter.

what kind of performance boost (any benchmarks) can be expected from this upgrade? some real life experiences of TP users here would be great to read.

The throughput of the drive will be at least twice as fast as any platter based drive you can buy. Plus SSDs have very low latency.

Yes, I think it is. Nobody's doing much for PATA drives anymore.

Registered just to give a tip to all t42p users, as I watched this forums to what ssd to pick.
I found out on some japanese page that a G-Monster IDE v2 from Photofast worked and indeed it works great.
I had nothing special to do to install windows7 and it worked out of the box without any tweaking.
It is faster than my old 7200rpm disk, and WAY cooler and silent (of course).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the info. I assume you are referring to this:

Does anyone know where you can get this drive in US?

I'm using a Transcend 32 gb model. Works right off the bat as a drop in replacement. Very fast.

The MLC one, pardon me. SLC isn't worth the extra $$, IMO. model: TS32GSSD25-M. Got mine on ebay for 80USD +shipping btw (and last year, too!). Takes about 20-30 seconds from pressing the power button to checking my email inbox :)

$80 plus shipping is not bad at all for an upgrade like that. Anybody here using Kingspec SSD that we see a lot on Ebay?

i just installed xp, and needed a few tweaks to get a responsive system, btw. Previously, I was on linux exclusively (which was excellent performance-wise).
