T42 won,t respond sometimes

#1 Post by tomjrc » Fri Oct 02, 2009 2:00 pm

MY t42 2373-8zu has been slow to respond lately when I download something and have to reboot. it won,t turn on so I let it sit for a few minutes then it is ok. when it is in limbo I press enter and the hard drive green light does nothing. could the hard drive be on its last legs?

It's more likely that some other parts are going haywire, likely the GPU.

Have you run PC-Doctor on that machine, to test the board, CPU and all the other important stuff?

Scroll down to Diagnostics: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55386

You could also check if your hard disk is getting full!
If so, a bit of housecleaning is required.

Seems like it's time for a new hard drive. There are many threads on the forum as far as which one is best for a T42. Good luck in your search. It is possible that you have more than one problem. I have never seen a hard drive prevent a Thinkpad from powering on, but it is possible I suppose.

+1

The only time I've seen something close to this is when the hard drive is downright dead to the point of creating a short (or a ground?) when you plug it in, but such a drive wouldn't even be recognized by the machine, let alone allow one to run a test on it...

Good luck...

I think im right in saying that Thinkpads ship with Hitatchi Travelstar drives still? If this is the case then download the hitatchi Drive Tools program from this link http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm (about halfway down the page) it will create a self bootable CD for you, run the long test & this will give you an error code if their is a fault on your drive. Better to get a second opinion that buy a new drive in vain

That drive is bad and needs to be replaced ASAP, no question about that.

The only question is whether there's something else wrong with the machine.

Have you downloaded and ran PC-Doctor by now?
