Sending my HVU back for service

#1 Post by Mr_Roboto » Sat Feb 12, 2005 3:14 pm

Long story short....I was copying CDs to my USB drive when the computer rebooted itself and a acrid smell started to come from its vents and the USB ports no longer worked. Unfortunately, I think that it has blown a capacitor.

I have called the IBM service department, in Atlanta Georga :D , and they are sending me a box to ship it back in. My question is, what can I expect, and what precautions should I take when shipping my beloved HVU back.

Regards,

Rich

If I were you, before giving mine up for longer than an hour, I'd remove the HDD, as far as I know no warranty is responsible for the data on the disk. If you don't wish to take the HDD out, atleast put some passwords on, for security's sake.

Also note down, just in case, the configuration of your system, perhaps something is forgotten to put back in and the sooner you discover it, the sooner it can be sent back to you.

Good luck with it!

Another question.

Are they going to replace the mother board in the unit or just swap my think pad with another one. The reason that I ask is that my screen does not have any dead pixles and I would like to keep it.

They usually only replace the faulty parts, even it's core as motherboard.

I just wanted to give an update to this post.

As I mentioned earlier, my USB ports died on my TP but other than that it functioned correctly. I called IBM EasyServ on a Saturday to start the RMA/repair process. The return box arrived on a Monday. Later that same day I sent may beloved TP back for repair. My only experience with repairs of this nature was with a friend who had to send his e-machines notebook back for a damaged hinge. It took about three weeks for him to get it back and they wiped his hard drive. I thought for sure that it would be at least a week be for I would see my TP again. Imagine my surprise when it showed up two days after I sent it out (the next Wednesday). That is just simply amazing :D .

Thanks again for all of your suggestions,

~Rich
