How to disable touch pad long-term???

#1 Post by CallDon » Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:49 pm

I love my T43. And now that I am used to it, I LOVE using the track point. But everytime I start the computer or "resume" from hibernating, I have to reset the UltraNav Wizard and "unclick" the "enable touch pad".

Is there a way to disable the touchpad completely without needing to do it every time i start the computer??

Thanks.

Remove the keyboard, and you will see a small square connector attached to a 'film' cable just left of the HD cage.
Disconnect that (lift it up and move aside), and put the keyboard back in.

Have you checked the BIOS settings?

Unplugging it works, but there is a palm rest without touchpad for the 14" T4X. The part number is in the hardware maintenance manual.

I wish they made one for the T60. I have it unplugged, but now I have to explain that the touchpad is disabled every time I let someone use my laptop.

Disable it in the BIOS or in the Thinkpad Configuration utility (which disables it in the BIOS) - end of story.

The BIOS did it, quick and easy. :D Thanks for all the suggestions.

I used the thinkpad configuration utility - theres an option to disable the trackpoint or the touchpad. Stays disabled until you go back in there and re-enable it.

I did not know what the configuration utility was/is. The Ultranav Wizard kept resetting to "on" anytime I would reboot or hibernate. I would always have to go back to ultranav Wizard and "untick" the trackpad box. Got tired of it.

So the bios fix worked. It "fixed" it.

Just for future reference, how do I find the configuration utility??

It seems to have been discontinued - Lenovo no longer pushes it with the updates and the list of officially supported machines does not include newer models. But it does include the T60.

Another problem with Configuration Utility is that it works only on Windows up to XP.

The palmrest without the touchpad doesn't come with a fingerprint reader I think as it was for the T40.

I found it online and installed it. Looks like it would have saved me that time I spent trying to figure out how to get to the bios.

One thing with the download, I now have a visual on the screen for the volume control. Yeah!
