DIMM Slot Cover Bulge

#1 Post by andypenguin » Sun Feb 13, 2005 12:45 am

I just got a new T42 2378-FVU and installed a 1GB SODIMM in the second expansion slot on the bottom. Is it supposed to bulge out very slightly when closed? I recall it being completely flat prior to installation. The RAM works fine but I was wondering if it wasn't installed correctly, if the cover was puttin g too much pressure on the DIMM.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I assumed the same thing. It's really slight, and not noticeable if you're not looking for it, but I assumed that everything on this TP would be absolutely perfect, everything else is :)

I accepted this on the Dell I have, doesn't bother me in the least, pretty much everything else on that thing is shoddily put together. Heh

Are you sure you have the cover completely closed? There are locking tabs midway on the cover that have to be seated before you screw it closed.

I've got a 1GB stick installed in my T40 and the cover is flat with no bulge.

It turns out the second tab broke off, which explains the slight bulge. Does IBM send out replacement parts for just the cover?

It's not really that big a deal, I suppose, but if they did, wouldn't hurt to ask.

IBM has an FRU for everything. Check the hardware maintenance manual...

You'll have to pay for it.

Even if it came like that? I knew it didn't break off when I removed it to add the RAM.

Well, I hope it's not too expensive.

The RAM cover on my T40 has had a very slight bulge since day one. It doesn't affect the usability of the machine or stare at me like a stuck pixel, so I don't worry about it :)

It really isn't THAT much of a bother now that I think of it, but thanks to everyone for their insightful replies. I'll ask them for a DIMM cover if I have to later ask for any part replacements (hopefully that time will never come)

For my T30, the HDD cover had broken (bought it used and it came this way) where the retaining screw goes in....actually cracked so I called IBM since my computer was still under warranty. They sent me a new HDD cover and with it came the DIMM cover as well (seems they are a set). To bad mine won't fit your computer...if it did, I'd gladly send it to you.

You're crazy  to think they'll make him pay for it. IBM is great about sending parts out and whatnot for things like that. They usually send you packagas of much more than you asked for. Like if you ask for one screw, they send you a whole package of every screw for the whole computer, etc.
