what is the diff between express & standard models in the t series?
standars seem too be more expensive.

Express configurations are heavily discounted by IBM compared to standard configurations. There are fewer Express configurations to choose from and highest CPU option isn't available on Express configurations. Some Express models only have a 1-year warranty. Other than these differences, the components are the same.

is the 2378 or 2379 inherently diff from 2373s or is it just to signify that one is express, one is standard?

No difference at all.
2373 are regular models.
2378 are express models with 1yr warranty (that you could extend)
2379 are express models with 3yrs warranty.

They all are the same model and components. There are good deals with 2379 if you get from IBM and 2373 if you get from Bill. Buying a 2378 I found it not practical for only one year warranty. If you extend the warranty the price will come similar to those 2379 models. Therefore, find the model best suite your needs and forget the "number".
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

with the express models, you only get a 15% EPP discount, standard models get a 35% discount, and a similar discount ratio with visa/mc/edu... discounts
