External USB HDD won't boot T42P

#1 Post by george981 » Fri Oct 16, 2009 3:46 pm

In the process of upgrading to a larger HDD using Ghost, I've put my old HDD into a USB external HDD case and installed the new larger HDD internally, per Ghost instructions. I've also altered the BIOS boot sequence accordingly, but the machine won't boot. Works fine when I reinstall the old HDD internally. What's wrong?

First, let me give you a hardy welcome to the forum! We hope to see you around here often, only not with more problems. Just to visit.

Have you tried F12 boot options, to choose the USB drive? I find that just setting the BIOS boot sequence doesn't always work. I usually have to manually choose the alternative boot drive from the F12 menu.

In the BIOS under config, look at the USB section to make sure it is turned on. (onlly needed for USB Boot) Also in the BIOS under startup, make sure USB HDD is included.

Thanks all. I've used the F12 boot option unsuccessfully. USB HDD is included in the BIOS under startup. USB section is turned on in the BIOS config. Using F1 key startup, the Boot Priority Order list includes USB HDD with a + sign preceding it. Moving USB HDD to the top of the list doesn't help. Using F12 key startup, the Boot Menu includes USB HDD with a - sign preceding and the notation "Initio - (USB)" following. Any ideas why this is happening?

Have you tried excluding the main hard drive in BIOS?
