Very close to buying a 2373GVU, few concerns.

#1 Post by BranE » Mon Feb 14, 2005 4:11 am

I can pick this up for $2,167 via education student discount.

1. What is the "Atheros AR5001X+ WLAN" is that going to be a seperate card or built into the case? And is it any good?

2. I really wish i could just add on a fingerprint reader, it could be so easy but intsead all these ibm models are so darn complicated.

3. Anybody foresee this price dropping significantly more in the (t43) future? It's already $500 off....

4. Is the flexview that comes with the 15" models that important?

Thanks! (first post)

I can help you with two questions:

ad 1: This is the regular IBM a/b/g Wireless MiniPCI card, you can exchange it anytime with a different IBM card. But it's probably anyway the best card available for Thinkpads (especially it is supported by Linux)

ad4: in my eyes it is not that important. If you rely on mobility I would defintely prefer 14''. Recently I could took a look at the 15'' Flexview and I was disappointed. It is not that much better than I thought.

1. it's built in. has very good range looking at feedback from other members, better than intel cards, but might consume a tad more battery

3. price will always drop but i doubt its significant, dont quote me. i dont think $500 dollar off is that big of a deal, at the higher end models like the one u r getting, they give u more discount. they sell a t42p at my sister's university for almost $1100 off the ibm web price. and with the 2373 models, they give 35% EPP discount.

4. i have the 14'' sxga, and it has poor view angles, ppl have also reported uneven color brightness and etc, but if you arent too picky, i wont choose the bulkier 15''

Not completely true. If you're going to use this in Linux, get a Senao variant. Atheros likes to play games like Broadcom and it's ill advised to support their efforts. I'd be thinking of a card based off the Prism GT chipset if you really had to have B/G.

Okay, an update:

I've found a much better deal now and I'm close to buying, my only holdup now is the burner. I'm considerin buying an external dvd burner but that's kind of a hassle. Is there anywhere that I can find the burning speed of the "ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive" as available on the t42p 2373-p1u.

1. What formats does it support.
2. How fast (8x 12x, etc., and also, approximately how long for a 4.7gb data disk)
3. Do the burns have decent success rates?

Thanks again![/i]

I got it EPP and paid $2504 for it. Also added a dock and got crushed by CA state sales tax.

They now say that it will ship on 2/28, I'm holding out for sooner.
