T23 Built-in WiFi?
Hi,
I recently bought a T23. There are a few problems with it (it will be going back and being exchanged soon), but in trying to fix some of them I found this on the IBM site:
Product: ThinkPad T23 2648-4NG
Original description: PIII-M 1.13GHz (512KB), 128MB RAM, 30.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8x-3.3x DVD-ROM, 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win2000
It's got built in wireless? I saw another auction which said that it had wifi, but I assumed that it was a cardbus card.
The listing for the one I bought did not say anything about wireless, but for both this model (4NG) and the other model (8PG) the desciption is the same.
Can I have some more info in this please?

Yes. At least, it shipped from the factory with internal wireless.systemparadox wrote:Hi,

There should be an Actiontec WiFi card in the miniPCI slot and an antenna connected to the card that runs behind the LCD.
It is possible that it has been reconfigured by someone.
If the card is there and you're using Windows you could look in device manager to see if it is installed... Or flip the laptop over and take off the MiniPCI door and take a look.
Hopefully the card is there. If not, hopefully the antenna wires are there...

Re: T23 Built-in WiFi?
miniPCI?! I always thought ppl meant cardbus/pcmcia/pc card. I had a look- there is a large black slot, which is empty :'( and a much smaller card labelled ethernet covering the small white connector it is plugged into. Is this the wired ethernet card? There is a white and a black wire loose- they look like they were plugged into whatever card was in the large black slot (along with another small connector)- these wires are visible just above the power connector, going in the lcd- they look like they are trapped- where are they supposed to go through?AbsoluteRaleigh wrote:

Ahhh... that would explain a) the other connector and b) why the modem isn't showing up.carbon_unit wrote:Sounds like somebody removed your wireless card. You should get another one. It is also your modem.
hehe- the modem being missing is a good thing- the auction said it had one so he really has to sort it out now.
Thanks
Simon
As an aside... I like having the modem as an "easily" changable card:
If it's not linux compatible I can change it so it is.
And it is easier (and probably cheaper) to replace it if it dies for some reason (I have had lots of modems die on me).
