T43 - Major help!

#1 Post by xebeche » Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:26 pm

My hard drive was infected with a virus and someone suggested reformatting the hard drive and starting over. So I pulled the drive out of the laptop and had it reformatted on another machine, put it back and reinstalled Windows XP.

Unfortunately I now realise that I have lost all the drivers that operated the hardware and cannot really do anything with the laptop. Is there a download that anyone is aware of that might help me retrieve the missing drivers? I was looking at this link but not sure if this will solve my problem.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-70034
It mentions (under Major Features) in the txt. file:
- Restoration of the hard disk to the same state it was in when the computer was manufactured [selected NetVista(TM), ThinkCentre(TM), and ThinkPad(R) computers only].

The machine I have is a ThinkPad T43, type 2669 and (as you may have guessed) I'm not too tech savvy.

Any help that anyone out there can offer would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

You should first check to see if the recovery partition is still on the hard drive. Try pushing F11 at bootup. If that works you will be able to restore the drive to its factory state.

Alternatively, you can can find the drivers at: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 58597.html

Many thanks for the repsonse; unfortunately the partition wasn't there, but I have downloaded some of the drivers form the link.

I am able to get on to the internet but only when I plug the cable into the laptop; I cannot figure out how to set up the wireless connection. The Network Adaptor is set up on my machine as Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet #2. I downloaded and installed the Wireless Lan driver and when I tried to update to it, it comes up with the message that no updated drivers are available. I even tried to uninstall the existing driver and update it, but windows just reinstates the original automatically.

Does anyone have any ideas? Once again, any help would be appreciated.

xebeche, Welcome to the forum!

I looked on my T43 and you need to install Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection to get wireless to work.

All the best.

Broadcom is your wired LAN connection, not your wireless.

What is the 7-character model number of your T43?

The Broadcom device you mention is your "wired" ethernet adapter and it sounds like its working so don't worry about that.

I was under the impression the T-series (and maybe others) came with the option of either Intel or Atheros wlan adapters? (assumung any wlan at all !)

In which case you need to know which is installed and then download and install the correct driver. If it is Intel then adding the Intel Proset s/w may help in setting up the wlan connection but only once the driver is installed and the card functioning

Download the drivers that you need (chipset, wifi, graphics etc), run the file that you've download. This unpacks the drivers to whatever folder you select, but default is C:\drivers\yadayadayada. Then you could either go into the specific folder for each driver downloaded, run the setup.exe and the driver will be installed. Or you could select the device in the device manager, right click and select "update driver software", and work your way to the drivers. This usually stops any third party ad-on applications that you might not want from being installed.

Yea. The Intel drivers are tagged "Intel PRO/Wireless.." and the Atheros-based are tagged "Thinkpad" on the driver download page.
