T40/T43 Transplant Problems

#1 Post by shooky32 » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:40 pm

My wife's T40 (2372) motherboard went bad. I purchased a bottom from a T43 (2668) and transplanted the LCD, Hard Drive, DVD Drive and added 2gb of DDR2. The hard drive from the T40 had a good XP Pro system on it. It was my hope that it would just upgrade a few drivers and we would be off to the races.

Well it almost happened.

First off on boot up we got the hard drive error which I am not sure is a big problem.

We hit esc and it proceeds to boot to windows finds a lot of new hardware but cannot find the drivers it needs. I cannot access the internet until I can get the driver for the ethernet.

Should this be fairly simple or am I looking at some major issues?

Welcome to the forum!

Hardware differences between T40 and T43 are significant enough to warrant a fresh install of your operating system.

Save the important files and start fresh with a set of T43 recovery disks.

1. Install all new T43 drivers in the c:\Drivers folder.
2. Uninstall all T40 hardware, shut down
3. Then put the HDD into the T43.
4. Boot into safe mode
5. Uninstall all hardware (if not done in 2.)
6. Reboot
7. Install all new hardware with the new drivers.
8. Reboot, normal Windows start.

Thanks for the info thus far.

Is there somewhere I can download the complete set of drivers?

Is there a recovery built into the bios of the t43?

Drivers can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58597

Recovery software is either on the HDD in a hidden partition or on CD. Not in BIOS.

I'm surprised that it even booted, with the IDE controller being different and all. I guess the compatibility is pretty good.

I'm not surprised that it booted, but there might be quite a few issues along the way since T43 uses a different HAL from previous T4x units.
