transplanting T42 hd and memory to T42P

#1 Post by pimpinainteasy » Sat Oct 24, 2009 10:13 am

I have a T42 with an aftermarket 250GB WD2500beve drive and 2GB memory.

Slow graphics performance has been annoying me, so I just bought a T42p on Ebay. The T42p only has barebones hd and memory, so I want to transplant the expansion memory (on the underside) and HD from my old T42 into the new T42p.

Should the memory and hd transplantation work out of the box? Do I need to update the T42p bios first? (I don't have the T42p in hand, so I don't know what bios version it's running.)

Also, I have a Dock II and Nvidia 6200 card just sitting around. Would I get significant video performance improvement over stock T42p if I got this working?

The T42p I just bought:

Many thanks for everyone's help. I've been reading this forum for years, but this is my first time posting here.

Welcome to the Forum.
You should be able to transplant all bits from your T42 to the new T42p without any problems.
You will need to uninstall the graphics driver and set it to plain VGA while the HD is still in the T42, before you swap the HD.
You could already download the new driver for the T42p (but don't install yet):

While you are at it, also download the PC-Doctor program, to test the new laptop:

Burn a CD from the .ISO file that you get from this.

Thanks very much!

By the way, the download link for T42p video drivers on ibm.com that you gave doesn't work for me (nothing happens after I click I Agree on the page and then ok the security exception in my browser), but I found another (working) link to the same driver file:

Actually, the video driver is shared throughout the whole T42 platform, so that's a non-issue. Your only other issues may be wireless card and bluetooth, everything else will work out of the box.

But NOT if the T42 has Intel graphics and the T42p has ATI graphics!

T42 never came with Intel graphics... R50e,R51,R52,T43 - all did, but not T42, strangely...
