Re: oiling the fan without opening T42
I don't think that there's any possible way to get the oil into the proper place(s) without opening up the system and (possibly) removing the fan/heatsink assembly.

i wouldn't like to unbolt the fan assembly for sure, putting the AS5 last time was quite messy and took time.
ok how about just opening the keyboard. can we achieve it this way, say using a bent paper clip to guide/slide the oil drop in position?

I think to get optimal and self-satisfactory results you will have to crack it open. I think it will be better for you to gain some confidence and assurance that the next time it needs to be opened- you're the person for the job!
I pretty much am all thumbs at a lot of things and freaked when I had to open up my first Thinkpad. At the time I had a Pentium 4 and felt it was putting out too much heat lol well as most of us know the P4 are known for the heat they generate! I downloaded the hardware maintenance manual and followed the diagrams and directions carefully. I also used blank paper to draw the areas where I removed the screws from and pushed the screws through the corresponding areas on the paper.
As for the Thermal Compound there are different ways people apply them. I use a clean razor and a half-grain of rice size dollop on the CPU. I spread it out evenly and thin. It really only takes me a minute or two to get it to the desired appearance.
Good luck on your TP
