Rapid Restore Ultra has eaten up half my 40GB HD!

#1 Post by XCoalMiner » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:09 pm

In two short weeks, Rapid Restore Ultra has eaten up half the 40Gb HD on my brand new T40, to the point where the total size is 20.3 GB.

I can't figure out how to change this! (to change what RRU backs-up). The documentation I see fails to mention how to configure what files are backed up, but I'm certain I selected something two weeks ago when I first got the machine and enabled RRU.

In reality, all I want to do is backup the registry, the Doc & Settings, and the OS.

By default RR 3.0 reserves 20% of the HDD for images, you changed probably this value during installation.

Un-install RR 3.0 and install the newer version 4.0 which is much better.

As suggested, I uninstalled RR 3.0, and installed the newer 4.0 (officially called Resuce and Recovery with Rapid Restore).

After complete de-installation of 3.0 (but before install of 4.0), the 40GB HD showed a size of 33.X GB, I exepcted it to show all of the 40.0. Does not sound correct?

Also in the intall process for RR 4.0, I was not prompted for any sizing of the hidden partition, only which files and folders to select. Does it size the partition automatically(?), and the only thing you have control over is the file/folders to be included?

A 40GB is an unformatted base 10 capacity and is not equivalent to 40GiB (the proper base 2 capacity.) 40GB = 37.25GiB (which is the number you'll see in any OS.) You then have to take some away for formatting. So you are actually only missing <4GiB or so which fits with the space taken by the factory HPA.

Also, RR doesn't affect the initial factory image so you won't get that area back just by uninstalling and installing a newer version. It only would give back any area that you had taken for your own personal images of your drive.
