what are the ramifications with using this R51 M.B. in my T42? Thanks in advance!

It's the same as swapping an R51 board into a T41. See this thread -

OK i have read more info than I dare to. does all this mean that If my computer has a Sxga 1400x1050 screen this ati r51 will not work on my machine / or it will but only give me xga resolution?

If the R51 board that you are getting has an ATI GPU, then it is no problem.

That's correct, ATI GPU R51 mobos will support SXGA+, Intel GPU R51 mobos will not.

Well thats good news! Which is the better M.b. for my T42? what does the intel have that the ati doesn,t?

There is a known flaw with the ATI boards in the T4X series where the GPU may become loose (or detached) from the PCB. Intel boards do not have this flaw. In your case the problem is that if you use an Intel board you also have to get a new LCD..XGA resolution, a new LCD cable, and a new inverter. At that point you might as well get a new laptop. The perfect candidate for an R51 Intel board is a T41 or a T42 with a pre-existing XGA LCD.

OK! you cleared that up perfectly. now what about a R52 intel? will it take a sxga/ does it have the gpu problem? would it be a good choice?

Yes it supports SXGA and no GPU problem. The issue with that setup is your current RAM and CPU are not compatible...so those would also have to be replaced.

Here'a another option for you. Part out that T42, sell the parts here, and buy this machine (link below). It's perfect for you (assuming your current Thinkpad is 15"), and George is a trusted seller here.
