LCD Light Leakage

#1 Post by Sasha » Tue Feb 15, 2005 12:04 pm

Hi

I have used the Search function and gone through previous posts, but have found no satisfactory explanation. I have been noticing this phenomenon recently, since changing the color of my desktop background to a dark color.

On the left-hand side of the LCD, there is a patch of white light in the middle of the LCD screen (height-wise), next to the LCD bezel. When I press the LCD bezel below this patch, it disappears. To me, it suggests a gap between the LCD/Bezel/Backlight.

Is this normal? If not, is there any solution? Or should I send in my laptop to IBM?

TIA

My replacement panel has this EXACT same problem. It's interesting to me to know that other panels have this problem and in the EXACT same place as mine. The first panel that came with the computer did not have this bright spot. The patch of white light is there even when the LCD is removed from the bezel, so I don't think it has to do with the mounting of the LCD...if you press down on the side of the actual LCD screen, the little patch of light also disappears then, too.

I figured that this meant that the left side of the actual LCD panel didn't get "crimped" down properly and the right pressure is not being applied on that side or something isn't sealed properly. Since it is so small and only visible on very dark/black backgrounds, I've decided to live with it in hopes that someday it might be repairable for a reasonable amount (this panel has no dead pixels so I'm kind of inclined to keep it...).

This is why I had my panel changed out to begin with:

..for the prompt reply.

Wonder how I missed your post during my search......

I was worried about the same thing...After being so A*AL about dead/stuck pixels and everything else, having got a perfect LCD (other than this patch), I really didn't want to send this laptop back to IBM for replacement....

Guess I'll have to grin and carry on living....one more of the ThinkPad's Quirks...eh??

I'm starting to think there are some different batches of faulty displays, some have whiter lines, some have reddish glows, some are loose and some have other various annoyances.

I wonder will there be "the perfect" display anytime soon that has eliminated those current quirks, as Sasha said :)
