Driver and IBM Software Updates Procedure

#1 Post by rgbyhkr » Tue Feb 15, 2005 1:09 pm

Ok, I've had my T42 (2373-CYU) for a while now and done a few driver updates here and there. However, I'm going to finally move to SP2 and I saw someone on the boards recommend bringing your drivers up to date beforehand to ensure best compatability. What I'm not sure about is which drivers I need to update.

I've gone to IBM's Downloads and drivers page and had it automatically detect my system. The list that comes back is extremely long. My question is how "smart" is the list? Does it return all results for drivers updated since your unit was first released? Or does it detect the various versions of drivers you are running (seems unlikely) and present you only with ones that are newer than what you have? Is there an easier way to update drivers and IBM software? I'm trying to avoid updating items unnecessarily.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

If you go to the IBM web site and so a search you will be able to find a migration instructions for SP2. They will tell you what to look out for and what to update. I followed it and my installation worked fine.

I can't seem to find the link right now, but if I do I will be sure to post it.

Like a number of others here, I do the updates manually. I keep current, so when there is new stuff, the list is generally short. Last night was a bit of an exception in that there were nearly a dozen new updates.

If you wish to get a starting point, download the most recent Software Installer and install it. Then run it, and do a "List of currently installed software". Print this list. Then go to the www-307 support site for your specific model, or to the matrix, and make a pencil note of what is new.

Then, download and install the updates. I set up a new folder under C:\Drivers and save new installs there just in case I need to go back to the Preload for any reason (has not happened yet).
